The contraceptives preparations are classified into different categories based on their mode of action as per details given below:

  1. Barrier method.
  2. Hormones based.
  3. Long term
  4. Natural birth control.

Even in spite of wide variety of the methods available effective in contraception, they have associated with them inadequacy factors on which the likes and dislikes play their role. None of these methods are 100 % safe.

Abstaining from sex is the only method with 100 % success, but the practical problem is it’s 100 % rejection by the partners.

The aim of the barrier method is prevention of pregnancy through sperms not meeting the ovum during sex act, with the help of female condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, contraceptive sponge and male condoms. These methods being non-hormonal are free from hormone related side effects. Male and female condoms are the only methods, which can prevent sexually transmitted diseases.

The hormone based contraceptives rely on synthetic hormones, which act like body’ hormone and are based on keeping the ovulation suppressed as in natural pregnancy. Some of these preparations act on the uterus wall making it thick and not capable of embedding the placenta in it, thus conception taken place is aborted. Use of hormones is associated with side effects like loss of desire to have sex in women. Such birth controls methods are accomplished by taking a pill daily or it’s numerous different modes of delivery of hormones like a hormone shot, a patch, implantation, birth control rings and hormonal IUD’s etc.

Other methods are tubal legations, vasectomy in men. Intra Uterine Devices remain in place for many years.

Because of side effects of hormone related birth control measures, Natural methods grouped under the category of Fertility awareness method and involve periodic absence of sex, when the woman is fertile.
