Making Healthy Food Choices

The health and age of the person depends on making healthy food choices or opting for junk food ignoring the long term potential of degenerative diseases like diabetes, hypertension, vascular diseases associated with consumption junk foods.

During the last century the average age span of a person varied between 70 to 90 years, which presently ranges between 60 to 70 years the primary reason being decline of availability of healthy food and preference of masses for convenience in making food ignoring healthy food.

One prefers to give to the school going child buttered bread slices, rich in cholesterol and pocket money to buy a cola drink to swallow the buttered bread slices.

Junk food call is a Phone call away made rich in saturated trans-fats instead of unsaturated fats, stale and stored vegetables, use of starch in place of whole grain floor, too much of salt and presence preservatives in sauces.

Healthy food must be made with canola or olive oil, the unsaturated oils, whole grain floor, variety of seasonal fresh vegetables and fruits. He requirement of protein can be met from skimmed milk, soya milk from vegetable sources or baked fish or chicken meat in stead of dairy products like butter, whole milk etc. Nuts, seeds and legumes are source of protein from vegetable sources.

Organic food is fast catching the attention of the consumers by highlighting the benefits and dangers associated with non-organic food.

A Healthy balanced food is the one:

  1. It is prepared from variety of fresh vegetables and fruits.
  2. Whole grain flour bread or pasta is used in making the meals.
  3. Protein is sourced from baked fish, chicken meat, dairy products and soaked lentils.
  4. The use of fats, sugars and salt should be minimized if not altogether dispensed with.

Healthy balanced food shall help in leading disease free life.
